Hong Kong remembers June 4th
The fourth of June marks the anniversary of Beijing's Tiananmen Square Massacre. It is said that upwards to 3,000 people were killed and over three times as many injured on this day when the Chinese government opened fire on a peaceful, non-violent protest calling for freedom and democracy.
Although public memorials in remembrance of these lives and the spirit of democracy for which they were shed are forbidden in other places of China, the Hong Kong people have kept the spirit alive. Annually tens of thousands of people gather to light candles in remembrance, sings songs for democracy and listen to the stories of mothers whose children were killed. Together the people of Hong Kong - young, old, families with small children, Chinese and foreign - call for justice, for truth to be told and for those responsible for the massacre to be held accountable for their actions.
The movement for democracy in Tiananmen Square will not be forgotten.
